Ah, the Rainbow Mountains! The best kept trekking secret in Peru! Most people who visit Peru end up hiking the famous 4 Day Inca Trail, a fabulous trek in its own right, but there are so many other spectacular trails in the Andean Mountain Range. The Rainbow Mountains Trek is easily one of the best. It’s true remote, pristine wilderness hiking and camping at it’s finest. You’ll hike 52 km (32.3 miles) over 4 days and summit mountain passes up to 5200 m (17,060 ft), gaining over 1900 m (6250 ft) over the course of the trek. Few travelers choose this trail so it’s off-the-beaten-path, free from crowds, and chock full of glorious mountain scenery. You’ll see snow-capped peaks, glacial mountains, turquoise lakes, hot springs, wild vicuña, wild chinchillas, several varieties of native birds, and the strikingly colorful, striated mountain ranges known as the Vinicunca Mountains or Rainbow Mountains. A photographers dream, these colorful peaks have unique geological features that give it a striped, rainbow-like appearance and feel very otherworldly. When I first glimpsed them I felt like I was on another planet!
The numerous, unique features of this trail are why we chose it as one of the two routes to highlight in our very first Video Treks! We’ve teamed up with Hot Tea Media, an incredible video production, social, media and digital marketing team, in order to bring the Rainbow Mountains to you! We can’t wait to showcase this incredible trail and hope to inspire others to join us and give back to local communities. Our Rainbow Video Trek departs on September 6, so stay tuned in the weeks following for incredible photos and videos posted here and on our YouTube channel.
